The 25 mm M1940 is a Soviet anti-aircraft gun design used by the Red Army. There are both single (72-K) and twin mounts (94-KM). Developement of the 25 mm gun began in 1939, many features were reused from the 37 mm AA gun M1939 (61-K). The 25 mm guns became an intermediate weapon between the 12.7mm DShK and 37 mm guns. Serial production started in 1941, but only a couple hundred were made in 1941 and 1942. It was first in 1943 that annual production was in the thousands, single gun mounts were also now fitted with a gun shield. This was mostly through the efforts at Plant No.88 where production began that year and where the design was made more fit for mass production. The 94-KM twin mount was also developed by the No.88 Plant design bureau. Unlike other 20 and 25 mm AA guns the M1940 is reloaded by clips which means it can fire continously like the 40 mm Bofors M1936 or 3.7 cm FlaK 43.
