In 1939 Hungary looked for a medium tank suitable for licensing. A Czechoslovak Skoda design T-21 was turned into a Hungarian Turán after its trials in Hungary. Before it was mass-produced by Hungarians, the tank was modified on a few points; a 3-man turret was substituted for the original 2-man turret, and a 260 HP V-8 engine designed by the Hungarian company Manfréd Weisz was installed.
The first Turán I vehicles with 40mm gun and 50mm frontal armor were sent to the troops in June 1942, but fought only from 1943 on. Due to its design being 3 years outdated, the 40mm gun was not effective enough against the Soviet tanks.
While it is fairly similar to the Panzerkampfwagen III, the Turan has a surpisingly fast reverse speed.
