Effective, though not without limitations, the Breda 37 represented perhaps the best of the various infantry weapons available to the Italian Army, outside of their excellent submachine guns. The use of lubricated ammunition invited stoppages, especially when introduced to the desert environment of North Africa. The Breda 37 typified the overall problems experienced by the Italian infantry. Every weapon outside of the submachine gun class included several unwelcome features. The Breda 37 is quite similar to the Mle 1914 Hotchkiss that has four more bullets per strip and slightly less rate of fire. Both guns can be deployed in the same types of tripods for anti-aircraft use, prone and crouched positions. In the map Sand Storm many of the German bunkers have this machine gun.

The M38 is a deriative of the Breda 37. It has significantly higher rate of fire and a slightly more bullets in a top mounted magazine. Uniquely hull mounted guns are paired which means that the relatively low magazine capacity can be compensated by firing one machine gun at a time while the other is reloaded.
