The Carro Armato P26/40 was designed for the Italian army as a new heavy tank. While the end result had performance comparable to the M4 Sherman tank. Something that makes the medium tank or heavy tank classification difficult. Italian heavy tank. It was designed in 1940 and was produced between 1943 and 1944. The majority of the tanks were used by German units to defend Italy after most of the Italian armed forces aligned with the allies.
The turret is equipped with the 75mm L/34 Mod. 1934 gun like the Semovente 75/34 and there are gun ports for the Beretta M 38a submachine gun on both sides of the turret. The 75mm gun is good against many targets.
The P26/40 saw no combat action by the Italian army. With the September armistice 1943 between the US, UK and Italian High Comand the Italian army was soon dissolved. However, the German army took over the tanks and used them as the Panzerkampfwagen P40 737(i). They were deployed in combat as tanks as well as static strongpoints. On maps such as Salerno, Battle for Ortona and Monte Cassino. Facing mostly M3 Lee, M3 Grant and M4 Sherman tanks.
The P26/40 may have HEAT rounds on some maps in which increases its effectiveness against vehicles but with lower velocity making it harder to hit at longer ranges.
