The ugly (Quote by Sir Winston Churchill) British Churchill (Named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough) was a heavy infantry tank that came into service in 1941. It was large, well armed, well protected, and would spawn many Churchill-based variants later in the war. Mk. I, Mk. II and Mk. III tanks were first used in combat during the Dieppe raid August 1942. The first variant of the Churchill had a smaller turret with a 40 mm gun and 76 mm gun located in the hull. The second variant was simplified by removing the 76 mm howitzer. The Mk III replaced the turret with a larger to fit a larger gun. In October 1942, six Mk. IIIs were sent to help fight the Germans in North Africa. Armed with 6-pounder main guns, the tanks of "KingForce" were reportedly able to hold out and only sustained minor damage from anti-tank guns. The Mk.III would be later replaced by the more numerous Mk.IV variant, but not before the Mk.III would be credited with capturing the first Tiger tank for the western Allies.
300 tanks were sent to the Soviet Union on Arctic Convoys. On the model of Soviet Churchill tanks the name of the Soviet general "Timoshenko" is written on the side of the turret in cyrillic. Chruchills were used at the battle of Prokhorovka.
