The battle of the Coral Sea was the first time aircraft carriers were put to combat against other aircraft carriers. The battle became a pyrrhic victory for the Japanese navy since it was weakened during the Battle of Midway. Each side has two carriers.

The US have the USS Lexington (CV-2) and the USS Yorktown (CV-5) carrrying F4F-3 Wildcat fighters, SBD-3 Dauntless bombers and the Douglas TBD-1 "Devastator" torpedo bomber. Both aircraft carriers have 127mm guns but differ in that the majority of the light anti aircraft on the Yorktown are .50 M2HB Browning in twin mounts where as the Lexington has quad mount 28 mm Mk.1 AA exclusively. Yorktown also has aircraft under deck so an elevator has to be used to access.

IJN Zuikaku and IJN Shōkaku are just about identical and have the Mitsubishi A6M "Zero", Aichi D3A "Val" and Nakajima B5N2 "Kate". The Islands of the original have been reduced to an lowly atoll that only makes an obstacle for ships.
