The Fiat-SPA 38R entered service in 1935, chosen over the FIAT-SPA 36R that had an air cooled engine to replace the obsolete SPA 25C. Fiat-SPA 38R had water cooling, weighed 3.2 tonnes empty and could take a load of 2.5 tonnes. It is the Italian equivalent to the Opel Blitz, GMC CCKW, and Bedford OY trucks. Besides passengers or crates of ammo it may carry a L3/33 in the back which can drive off from it directly into action. The tankette weighs atleast 200 kilos more than the stated maximum load for the truck so it may be a reference to a scene in the Girls und Panzer movie rather than historical practice. Like the Isuzu Type 94 Truck and Bedford OY the drivers position is to the right.
Autocannone da 20/65 su Fiat-SPA 38R was a self-propelled anti aircraft variant and the most common Italian one during the war. Mounting the 20 mm gun that was used on the Carro Armato L6/40 too.
The French military bought multiple different Italian trucks including this type before Italy declared war in 1940. Of the 500 ordered about 400 arrived in France before the war declaration.
