The HMS Lion battleship is the leading ship of the Lion-class battleships. The class contains four fast battleships designed for the Royal Navy in the late 1930s. They were a larger, improved version of the King George V class with 40.6 cm BL 16 inch Mk I naval guns. Only the HMS Lion and the HMS Temeraire were laid down before World War II began in September 1939 and a third was ordered during the war, but their construction was suspended shortly afterwards.
They were designed as a answer to the heavy battleships from Nazy-Germany (like the Bismarck) the Japanese heavy battleships (like the Yamato). Their goal was to designs a ship with limited displacement to 35,000 long tons (36,000 t) and later to 40,000 long tons (41,000 t). The Lion-class designs were much the same as the King George V class. But the turrets and armament were revisited. Instead of 14 Inch guns, the Lion-class was equiped with 16 Inch guns. The choice went to the 40.6 cm BL 16 inch Mk I naval guns. In each main turret, there were three guns and the ship had two main turrets on the front and one on the back. On starboard and port, there were four turrets each with two 13.3 cm QF 5.25 inch guns, which can fire HE as well AA rounds. The same guns used on the King George V class.
None of the ships in that was in the process of being built or planned were finished or laid down, although there was a proposal to modify one of the suspended ships into a hybrid battleship/aircraft carrier with two 16-inch gun turrets and a flight deck. The two ships already begun were scrapped after the end of the war.
