Knives are part of almost every infantry equipment kit and comes in different forms. Most of them are bayonets like the Seitengewehr 84/98 but the Finnish "puukko" was a civilian knife brought into military service. All knives deal high damage and have about the same reach. Since the original Battlefield 1942 only had two knives, one for axis troops and one for the allies', these knives are still the most common but have been replaced for some armies.

The Finnish Puukkoo knife
The knife of the allies seem to be the M5 bayonet made for the M1 Garand as there is not any barrel mount ring on the crossguard. But it looks similar to most US bayonets with black plastic grips, altough the M5 bayonet was created postwar it is a carry over from the original Battlefield:1942 which was more lenient in terms of historical accuracy. Although on some maps it is replaced with the M4 Bayonet for the US and kits with the SVT 40 have the SVT 40 Bayonet. The Axis knife is the Seitengewehr 84/98 but slightly smaller, it is used by both Germans and Hungarians. While almost entirely replaced by the Type 30 Bayonet for the Japanese, it is still used by their pilots who would have had no reason to carry a bayonet with a long blade and a hook on the quillon. The Italians only use the Model 1891 Carcano Bayonet.
While almost all kits carry some melee weapon there is one major exception, those with light machine guns like the BAR 1918 or the MG 34 with a 50 round belt.
