The M3 Grease Gun was an American submachine gun from the later half of WWII. Much like the British Sten it was designed as a simpler, cheaper replacement for the Thompson submachine gun. The US army had already adopted the M2 Hyde submachine gun as a substitute standard weapon in 1942 and US marines had been issued the M50 Reising but neither were succesful, M2 production had been delayed and then cancelled with the introduction of the M3. Most M3 used the same .45 caliber round as the Thompson, but about a thousand were made to use 9mm rounds as the Sten and MP40. The M3 was succesful in that despite it being cheap to manufacture, it was a generally reliable weapon and thanks to its low rate of fire it was easy to control. The M3 has a rate of fire of 400 rounds per minute, while the sten and MP40 have 500 RPM and the M1 Thompson 650 RPM. At the end of World War 2 around 600,000 Grease Guns (both M3 and M3A1) had been made with less than one tenth being M3A1. The biggest difference with the M3A1 model was that the charging lever which had been used to cock the weapon was removed and instead a groove was made in the bolt to cock the gun by pulling it back by hand.
Like the American Thompson the M3 Grease gun were supplied to US allies like the Free French Forces who relied on US and British army equipment. The British also used the M3 during the war, in the game it can be found on the map Operation Goodwood. The German army designation for captured M3 submachine gun was MP763(a).
