The M9 rifle grenade was an American anti-tank rifle grenade introduced in the middle of WWII. The M9 was preceded by the M10 which was able to penetrate 60 mm of armour, but it was too heavy to be launched from rifle. This issue lead to the development of the M1 Bazooka. M9 rifle grenades were also used by other western armies. It was designated the No.85 rifle grenade by the British army. The M9 was superceded by the more effective M9A1 in 1944, it could penetrate 102 mm of armour at 90 degree angle but was still not effective enough against heavy armour. During the Korean War it was quickly replaced by the Energa rifle grenade.
