After the defeat of the Netherlands at home their colonial military increased their efforts in securing military equipment to keep what is now Indonesia secured. The place where they were most likely to get new equipment was from the US which still 1941 was at peace. The company Marmon-Herrington got an order of over 600 tanks to produced in about an year which was unprecendented for the company.

The MTLS-1G14 was the heaviest tank that was produced by the Marmon-Herrington company for the Dutch military. Essentially it doubled some specfications of CTMS-ITB1, a light tank with a 37 mm gun and a crew of two. Resulting in a novel medium tank design with twin 37mm auto cannons loaded with five rounds each and up to seven machine guns. The MG mounted on the right side in ball mount on the turret is operated independently. While theoretically a lot of firepower the two auto-cannons were so unreliable it was too common that not even the first shot fired during testing by US military. The weight was double that of CTMS-ITB1 which was a problem for the suspension. The only entry and exit point for the whole four man crew was through a hatch on top of the turret.

The tank was tested and rejected in 1943 by the US military due to major shortcomings. They were then sent to the Dutch colony of Suriname in South America where they then stayed. Ultimately it never saw combat as plans to ship them to Indonesia where the Dutch fought after the world war was considered to expensive.

Other tanks ordered[]

The only tank produced by Marmon-Herrington which was used by Dutch against the Japanese was the CTLS-4TA, a light tank fitted only with machine guns and had the turret either to the left or right from the centre of the hull depending on the version. Seven of these tanks had arrived and were operational.

Along with two-man tanks and the MTLS-IG14 four-man tank was the similar looking, smaller two-man tank CTMS-ITBI which mounted a 37mm gun and two to three machineguns which like the and four-man tank would only serve in the Americas. Unlike the four-man tanks which were relegated to Dutch territories there these were used by Cuba, Guatemala and Ecuador. Nevertheless, most of the tanks built which the US military had in possesion were scrapped after trials.
