The Nashorn, German for "rhinoceros" is a German tank destroyer. It was first nicknamed Hornisse, German for Hornet. It was the first design to mount the long 88 mm PaK 43 gun which was to large for the Tiger I but became the main gun of the Tiger II. The Nashorn is similar to the Marder series of vehicles which converted obsolete tanks into tank destroyers but there was no surplus of tanks that could mount a gun this large. The Nashorn was built on the Geschützwagen III/IV hull design, an elongated hull that used components of both the Panzer III and IV. Like many other German tanks it first saw combat in the battle of Kursk in 1943. Like the Ferdinand tank destroyer it was very effective against Soviet tanks at long distances, where its thin armor plating and open top was less important. Since it was not overburdened with armor it was more mechanically reliable than the Ferdinand tank. Still, it had a high profile but it could be mitigated by proper use of cover like in a dug in position to only expose the gun shield. Another vehicle based on the Geschützwagen III/IV like the Nashorn was the Hummel, which was the only armored vehicle to mount a heavy 150 mm field howitzer. The Nashorn was produced to the end of the war but production diminished in favor of better the protected Jagdpanther that had the same gun or just better protection like the Jagdpanzer IV.
The model was made by Frank and tweaked by FHSWman.
