The Panzerkampfwagen I was the first mass produced series of German tanks used in World War II. The tank would constitute a large part of the early tank forces. By the end of 1941 it had been largely removed from front line service, and production of the tank itself ceased by 1943. Its chassis remained in use as the basis of several other armored vehicles. The Ausf. A & B were the most common and were the basis for the command version and self propelled gun variants. The Ausf had a higher velocity gun and The Ausf F had much more armour up to 80mm sloped armour and fitted with twin MG 34 instead of MG 13 or MG 30.

Just as the L3/33 and other interwar tanks it was used in the Spanish civil war. It was outperformed by the T-26 which lead to Armour piercing ammunition being issued but this measure was in turn mitigated by T-26 tanks engaging beyond the effective range of the AP ammo. Five tanks were sold to the National Chinese army.

This version would be the basis of self propelled guns such as the Panzerjäger I which mounted an captured Czech 47mm gun and the Sturmpanzer I that had an 150mm infantry gun. As late as 1942 eight of Ausf. B and six command versions of the tank were sold to Hungary
