During the war, it was soon clear a new type of anti-tank handweapon was needed when the anti-tank rifles of the period were weak against the modern tanks of World War Two. This lead to the Faustpatrone and Panzerfaust. However, after the Germans captured some American M1 Bazooka's, they would copy this design to make an anti-tank rocket handweapon which could be reloaded. 88 mm rockets were already used in the Raketenwerfer 43 "Püppchen", a very small artillery piece but it was realized the same rocket could launched from something smaller. The result was the Raketenpanzerbüchse 43 (abbreviated to RPzB 43) or best known as the Panzerschreck. Another popular nickname was Ofenrohr ("stove pipe"). Although this 8.8 cm weapon was incredibly powerful, it created a large backblast, forcing the operator to wear protective clothing. In October of 1943, the weapon was improved by adding a blast shield to protect the operator and it received the name Raketenpanzerbüchse 54'. Although based on the American ones, the German rockets were much larger and as a result were able to penetrate nearly twice as much armour as their American counterparts. Compared to the Panzerfaust that also were fielded the effective range was higher but the Panzerschreck had to be used by two people to be used effectively. One man carried the weapon and a wooden rack with space for three rockets on his back, while the other man loaded these rockets and connected the wiring on the rocket to the launcher so that it would fire when the trigger was pressed.
