The Seitengewehr 84/98 is the standard bayonet for the Mauser 98K rifle. It can be used both mounted on the rifle or as a knife. The knife is almost always available in German, Hungarian and Polish kits, Japanese pilots of the Imperial Navy also use it. In Battlefield 1942 it acted as the knife of all axis factions but with addition of more bayonets & knives some nations have gotten their own. The Shovel and even more rarely the Nailclub can be in German kits aswell.
Compared to the previous bayonet issued in the Germany army the Seitengewehr 84/98 was lighter and less expensive. The blade was shorter and during the war the wooden grips were replaced with bakelite plastic. The bayonet lug and locking system remained unchanged.
