The Supermarine Spitfire was the first all-metal fighter, which was manufactured in the UK. The aircraft was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin or Griffon engine producing up to 2,050 hp. The first prototype of this outstanding fighter with the distinctive thin, oval-shaped wings flew for the first time in 1936. The serial production began in 1938, just in time, because the British would need their Spitfires urgently: on 13 August 1940 the Battle of Britain began and Hitler Germany wanted to gain air superiority over the British Isles. This operation ended in disaster for the German Air Force, partly due to the availability of larger amounts of Spitfire fighters.
During the war the Spitfire was used on all fronts where British fought: against the Japanese in Southeast Asia, against German and Italian in the Mediterranean and of course the homefront. It was further developed and adapted to the new requirements, so it was always grown or superior to the best opposing aircraft Spitfire's often procured the decisive advantage especially with their excellent maneuverability and gradeability.

With the appearance of the Fw 190 on the Channel coast, the Mk V was suddenly a distinct disadvantage in terms of performance. Because the introduction of the Mk VIII was far from realized, a temporary solution was needed. Thus, the cell of the Mk V was equipped with the new Merlin 60 series engines and this modification was called the Mk IX.
In the game the main difference between Mk IX and Mk VB is that the four 7.7 mm M1919A4 Browning MG's were replaced by two 12.7-mm Browning M2HB's. But climbing ability and maneuverability at high altitudes are noticeably better.
Mk 22[]
The Mk 22 was the penultimate version of the Spitfire at all and was of limited use.
In the game you can easily distinguish them from the others because it has a six-bladed propeller and four 20-mm cannons - improved Hispano Mk V type, which has a slightly higher rate of fire. The engine is far more powerful than one of its predecessors, which makes the Spitfire Mk 22 one of the fastest piston-driven fighters in the game.
