The T-44 was the Soviet medium tank that ended up replacing the T-34 after WWII. T-44 was foremost an improvement in that it had better cross-country performance and armour. It was an near total redesign. Although this meant that if Soviet industry would produce this vehicle it would be at the cost of less T-34 tanks and less tank production overall. This meant that the T-44 was not produced in many numbers until the end of the war, but the design continued and lead to T-54 and T-55 tank designs. It would not be used in combat until the Budapest Uprising in 1956.
This tanks can be found in many maps set in 1945 or later. It is essentially an upgraded T-34-85 and benefits from a lower profile than that tank and especially compared to the German Panther tanks. Like on the Carro Armato P26/40 and Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger there are pistol ports that can be used to fire a submachine gun from on both sides of the turret.
The T-44 is somewhat similar to the American T20 series of medium tanks designed to replace the M4 Sherman. Like the T-44 these tanks had a lower profile and many of the prototypes had the same guns as the medium tanks currently in service. None of the T20 tanks were adopted by the US military but they played a major part in the development of the M26 Pershing. The T-44 faces these tanks in the battle of Alaska in this mod.
In version 0.73 of FHSW the coaxial DT machine gun was replaced with the belt fed GVG, the prototype of the SG-43 machine gun.
