Historical Picture

The T8 90 mm AT was an American anti-tank gun, like the M5 3 inch Anti-Tank Gun it was derived from an anti-aircraft gun combined with the 105 mm howitzer M2A1. The issues that the 3 inch gun had were exarcebated with 90 mm anti tank gun project and the development went in different directions, including moving over developement to a 105 mm anti-tank gun to reliably penetrate a Tiger or the like. One problem with 90 mm gun was that the gun and carriage made it very long so three alternative designs were made. 200 hundred were ordered, the first three were made in 1944 and the total order was complete in June 1945. A single gun was dispatched to Europe in February 1945 to test the gun in combat. They did not send any to the Pacific since Japan did not have any heavily armoured vehicles that would have needed such a heavy and powerful gun to combat. Using the same ammunition as the 90 mm gun of the M26 Pershing and M36 Jackson this is the most powerful gun available for the US forces and their allies. Oddly enough, the remaining 90 mm T8 AT guns ended up being assigned to airborne units like the 82nd, despite the fact the gun was so heavy they had no means to transport them during airborne operations.
