Compared to the TOG-2, the TOG-3 is specialized further to combat enemy tanks. Extra armour has been applied and the conventional 17 pounder has been replaced by the even more powerful recoilless gun. The main gun replacement is less effective against infantry but multiple machineguns and a three inch howitzer can deal with it.

It is unique in having a recoilless gun inside the turret, since the exhaust is hindrance to this which leads most designs to mount these type of weapon on the sides or on top of a turret or superstructure. Pzkpfw IV mit 7,5 cm Ruckstossfrei Kanone 43 & 3cm MK 103 is the only other armoured vehicle with a recoilless gun.

HESH rounds are also available for the british RCL 3.45in Mk 1. As that round had a maximum penetration of 180mm this even larger recoilless gun must have performance to go toe to toe many heavy tanks.
