Since 1941 the Hungarians had been building the Árpád line in the Eastern-Carpathians, on the ruins of its World War One predecessor. They also had access to experience from the Germans of the shortcomings of the Maginot line and Maginot line, aswell as the quite succesful Mannerheim line of the Winter War. Like the Mannheim line the Árpád line was built with a flexible-defense tactic in mind. The mountains served as a natural stronghold, with few and tight passes, sticky downhills, with sometimes 2000 m height. The Soviet troops reached the line in summer 1944, and were held back for more than three weeks. This was despite the fact that much of the defensive line was not complete, little and obsolete equipment and few men to man the lines.

Across the river from the Soviet base is the two mountain passes leading to the Hungarian base. Each of the passes have been fortified with pillboxes, trenches, tank turrets and anti-tank guns. Once up in the valley there is farm to secure on the way to main Hungarian base.
