USS Benham was the lead ship of the ten in total Benham class. Its design largely followed USS Bagley (DD-386) and USS Gridley (DD-380) before it. Its dedicated anti-aircraft armament was quite limited at first with only .50 machine guns as it was thought the dual purpose guns would be enough, it was later bolstered following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
1942[]
The Benham1942 version of the Benham destroyer has it anti-aircraft capability is increased with two dual 40 mm Bofors gun mounts and 20 mm Oerlikon guns replacing the .50 M2HB Browning positions. The rest of the Benham class always has this gun layout.
