Forgotten Hope Secret Weapon Wiki

The Yakovlev Yak-9 was the main fighter of the Soviet Air Force from the middle of WW2. It was produced in larger numbers than any other Soviet fighter: there were more Yak-9 taken on active duty as of all other Soviet fighters. The design of the Yak-9 was based on the requirements of mass production and in the conditions of the limited import capability of certain metals, in addition, the aircraft had to be sturdy and durable.

The Yak-9 was considered a highly robust and provided ballistic protection, which made it a good ground attack aircraft. There were modifications, specially adapted for this role. The Yak-9 was introduced to the Soviet Air Force in October 1942 and remained there until the early fifties and was used later in allied countries such as Poland, Hungary, China, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

The armanent of Yak-9 in FHSW is improved compared to Battlefield 1942. It doesn't have the unrealistically large bomb load, it comes either as a pure fighter, fighter-bomber or ground attack aircraft. It is available in three versions, two of which have similar rockets, but serve different purposes.

The BRS-82 is designed for tank hunting, but the penetrating power against serious and even some medium tanks is not very convincing, since it usually takes several direct hits to disable a tank. By contrast, the RS-82 has an explosive warhead to combat armored targets and infantry.

On the Yak-9P the 12.7 mm machine guns were replaced with 20 mm ones, which meant much more firepower in a dogfights. Because it has the same engine as previous versions, the agility and speed is unchanged.

The Yak-9T was specifically designed to hunt tanks. It is an upgraded Yak-9 with a 37-mm cannon in the propeller hub. Although it can carry only a small supply of ammunition and produced a tremendous setback, they proved to be in use. Due to the heavy nose, maneuverability decreased slightly.

All these features are also found in the game, even if the return of the weapon affects not so much on the flight behavior. Damage is greater when you fire form great height in the engine room of target, as it is usually has weak armour. In real life, shell fired from a 0.5 km at 45 degrees was able to penetrate 30 mm armor (Tiger tank had 28 mm roof armour).

Experienced pilots can do it well, the cannon is also effective in air combat, as it takes just two hits to send enemy aircraft toward earth.

The Normandie-Niemen Regiment used this aircraft along the Yak-3.

Upgraded variant of the Yak-9U, looks almost identical except for the slightly higher caliber and shorter cannon in the nose. It is a fighter equipped with two 20mm ShVAK cannons and one 37mm NS37 cannon. All cannons are automatic and have a decent rate of fire.

It has improved mobility compared to the Yak-9T, and combined with increased firepower it is an aircraft that can perform against aircraft and in ground attacks more effectively.

As of FHSW version0.611 it is found on the maps Alaska and Seelow Heights.
